This page is for psychotherapists interested in the relational TA model of psychotherapy.
TA was one of the first theories to emphasise the interactive nature of the therapeutic dyad. The ego state model provides us with an intrapsychic model of object relations and the transactional model shows how these internalised objects are enacted within the relationship. The unconscious enactment is identifiable by an analysis of the ulterior transaction. In Relational TA these original TA concepts are developed towards an in-depth theory of psychotherapy.
What is relational TA?
Relational TA draws upon the above theoretical models
in order to provide an in-depth way of thinking about our work as psychotherapists. Novellino and Moiso originally drew upon the neo-Freudian base of TA and developed a methodology which centres on:
- interpretation of transference and countertransference phenomena as seen through ego states, games and scripts.
Hargaden & Sills took this further by developing:
- a theory of self based upon ego states
- a transferential matrix which allows for a wide range of inter subjective analysis
- the development of empathic transactions
Relational TA is further influenced by contemporary psychoanalytic and humanistic thinking, including self psychology, relational psychoanalysis, Jungian analysis, person-centered concepts of empathy and theories of phenomenology.
It involves:
- a transferential model of understanding relationship
- a focus on the subtlety of explicit and implicit inter subjective dynamics
- a consciousness of the significance of the non verbal ambience and non verbal ulterior transactions often understood as the implicit relationship
- the use of empathic transactions
- a TA theory of self
